Question 191

Q191. What do we pray for in the second petition?

A. In the second petition (which is, Thy kingdom come)1, acknowledging ourselves and all mankind to be by nature under the dominion of sin and Satan,2 we pray, that the kingdom of sin and Satan may be destroyed,3 the gospel propagated throughout the world,4 the Jews called,5 the fullness of the Gentiles brought in;6 the church furnished with all gospel-officers and ordinances,7 purged from corruption,8 countenanced and maintained by the civil magistrate:9 that the ordinances of Christ may be purely dispensed, and made effectual to the converting of those that are yet in their sins, and the confirming, comforting, and building up of those that are already converted:10 that Christ would rule in our hearts here,11 and hasten the time of his second coming, and our reigning with him forever:12 and that he would be pleased so to exercise the kingdom of his power in all the world, as may best conduce to these ends.13

Matthew 6:10: Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Ephesians 2:2-3: In which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience — among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Psalm 68:1, 18: God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered; and those who hate him shall flee before him! ... You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train and receiving gifts among men, even among the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there. Revelation 12:10-11: And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.

2 Thessalonians 3:1: Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you.

Romans 10:1: Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

John 17:9, 20: I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. ... I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word. Romans 11:25-26: Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob." Psalm 67: May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Selah. that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Selah. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, shall bless us. God shall bless us; let all the ends of the earth fear him!

Matthew 9:38: Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 2 Thessalonians 3:1: Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you.

Malachi 1:11: For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts. Zephaniah 3:9: For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call upon the name of the LORD and serve him with one accord.

1 Timothy 2:1-2: First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

Acts 4:29-30: And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus. Ephesians 6:18-20: Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. Romans 15:29-30, 32: I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ. I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, so that by God's will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. 2 Thessalonians 1:11: To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17: Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

Ephesians 3:14-20: For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.

Revelation 22:20: He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Isaiah 64:1-2: Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence — as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at your presence! Revelation 4:8-11: And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!" And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created."
